ABA inspires lawyers to remain committed to human rights
Events and Seminars | 2010/06/18 03:44

In today’s speech to the Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms Conference in Italy, American Bar Association House of Delegates Chair William C. Hubbard inspired lawyers to re-commit themselves to the hard work of protecting human rights and strengthening the rule of law.

Hubbard said, “Lawyers and human rights advocates struggle with crises old and new … against genocide and mass atrocities and their consequences. … We struggle against terrorism while seeking to protect due process for the accused. … We struggle to help the corporate sector make a positive impact on human rights and remedy conditions that compromise basic human dignity for workers. … We struggle to secure the human rights of women and girls and combat all forms of violence against women. … From wherever we come … lawyers speak the same language.  We defend liberty for all.  We pursue equal justice for the mighty and the lowly.  We share a mission and a common sense of purpose, and we have much work before us.”

Hubbard represented the ABA at today’s meeting at the request of association President Carolyn B. Lamm.  He presented his remarks to international lawyers and legal scholars convening in Rome to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.

He stressed the essential connection between a country’s rule of law and its citizens’ daily quality of life.

“The ABA has long endorsed the founding documents of modern human rights law and supported the international community in its efforts to extend basic legal protections to all people. …  In fact, the ABA regards the promotion of universal human rights and the rule of law as part of its core mission as an organization,” said Hubbard.

Hubbard outlined the ABA’s role in establishing three key entities to track human rights and rule of law around the world:  the ABA’s Center for Human Rights, the Rule of Law Initiative and the now independent World Justice Project with its ever-growing Rule of Law Index.

With nearly 400,000 members, the American Bar Association is the largest voluntary professional membership organization in the world.  As the national voice of the legal profession, the ABA works to improve the administration of justice, promotes programs that assist lawyers and judges in their work, accredits law schools, provides continuing legal education, and works to build public understanding around the world of the importance of the rule of law.

Legal association to Host “Justice Jog” 5K for Charity
Events and Seminars | 2009/10/06 02:34

When Rosemary McKenna completed a summer associate job with Blank Rome LLP in Philadelphia, she was happy to receive an offer of full-time employment. But instead of starting her new position last month as planned, Ms. McKenna, who graduated from Temple University's Beasley School of Law in May, will be working as a hostess at a local restaurant.

Law firms are asking new hires to defer their employment start dates, an unprecedented step for many firms that have weathered previous economic downturns without wide-scale postponements. Large firms such as Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP and Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP have delayed the start dates for their new associates for a full year or more. Summer internships -- usually the surefire way to land a job -- produced fewer offers than ever before, law firms and students say. And because law firms budget for hiring a year or two in advance, law-school classes of 2010 and 2011 face an equally difficult environment.

To cope, some would-be attorneys are seeking pro-bono fellowships, while others are taking jobs ranging from temporary work for their alma maters to waitressing or bartending. And law school career-service officials are advising students to take whatever work they can find to pay their bills.

Ms. McKenna has been working two hostess jobs at restaurants in Philadelphia to make ends meet. The 26-year-old was told she will be able to start work at the law firm in January.

LOS ANGELES- The members, families and business partners of the Greater Los Angeles Chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators (GLA ALA) are teaming up to host the GLA ALA Justice Jog 5K on October 18, 2009

Celebrity attendees include: the Los Angeles Laker Girls (leading the stretches) and Los Angeles City Councilman Dennis Zine (an honorary server of breakfast), and Woodland Hills fire station #84 (displaying one of their fire engines at the finish line).

GLA ALA will organize a 5K Walk/Run to support A Place Called Home (APCH), a South Central LA nonprofit offering youth education, gang prevention and mentoring programs. Youth members of APCH with dreams of attending law school will also walk in the 5K.

Last year’s GLA ALA Justice Jog 5K 2008 raised over $12,000 for charity with the support of 421 runners and 100 volunteers.

The GLA ALA Justice Jog starts at 6:30 a.m. at Warner Park, 5800 Topanga Canyon Blvd. in Woodland Hills.

A Denny’s breakfast starts at 7:30 a.m. Registration is still available for $30 per adult, $15 per child (5-12).

“I am proud to be a part of such a unique event, joining different sectors of the legal community together including large LA-based law firms, businesses, athletes, families, members and friends, for a worthy, charitable and fun cause,” says Cindy Fortune, GLA ALA event chair.

The event is part of GLA ALA’s Community Challenge Weekend (CCW), a community service initiative that encourages community improvement.

Jeffery Leving to Deliver Keynote Speech
Events and Seminars | 2008/07/07 09:46
‘Dads Make A Difference’ is the theme of the 2008 annual conference hosted by The Fathers & Families Coalition, Inc.’s Get F.I.T.  (Southwestern Fatherhood Institute Training). The conference will be held July 8 & 9 in Tucson, Arizona. The mission of the FFCA is to enhance the capacity of service providers throughout the nation, so they will be better equipped to effectively serve fathers, mothers and children. In doing so, the FFCA is able to improve the outcomes for children, through healthy father and family interaction.  Chicago attorney Jeffery M. Leving will deliver the keynote speech at the conference on Wednesday, July 9th, at 12 pm.

“Any man’s loss of a child diminishes mankind,” commented Leving, “we must educate the public on the vital importance of the relationship between father and child, he added. The theme of this year’s conference is ‘Dads Make A Difference’. A father’s absence hurts. The lack of a father’s presence in the life of a child is linked to substance abuse, teen pregnancy, promiscuity and a host of other issues that greatly lessen the child’s chance at a successful and prosperous life.

Mr. Leving has long held the belief that fathers who are armed with the proper parenting tools and resources will raise healthier children. Leving is the author of “Fathers’ Rights”, co-authored The Illinois Joint Custody Law, and has been a tireless crusader of the advancement of fathers’ rights in America’s courtrooms. The Law Offices of Jeffery M. Leving, Ltd. represents fathers across the globe, ensuring that fathers remain strong and vital influences in the lives of their children. Ms. Wilson consulted with P/PV (Public/Private Ventures) on their Young Unwed Fathers’ Pilot Project and co-authored Fatherhood Development: A Curriculum for Young Fathers’, among other numerous positions with non-profits.

The conference will host professionals and fathers from 15 different states, showing the growing presence of organizations committed to the education and uplifting of fathers in America and the effect they are having on men, women and children across the U.S. There is limited seating still available. For more information about the conference, please visit www.axffc.org. Press inquiries should contact Carrie Klepzig at 312-730-5864(mobile) or 312-807-3990.

Class action or a representative action is a form of lawsuit in which a large group of people collectively bring a claim to court and/or in which a class of defendants is being sued. This form of collective lawsuit originated in the United States and is still predominantly a U.S. phenomenon, at least the U.S. variant of it. In the United States federal courts, class actions are governed by Federal Rules of Civil Procedure Rule. Since 1938, many states have adopted rules similar to the FRCP. However, some states like California have civil procedure systems which deviate significantly from the federal rules; the California Codes provide for four separate types of class actions. As a result, there are two separate treatises devoted solely to the complex topic of California class actions. Some states, such as Virginia, do not provide for any class actions, while others, such as New York, limit the types of claims that may be brought as class actions. They can construct your law firm a brand new website and help you redesign your existing law firm site to secure your place in the internet.
