Fox Rothschild acquires Roseland-based law firm
Legal Marketing | 2007/07/13 05:10

In a centennial birthday present to itself, Fox Rothschild has acquired a North Jersey law firm, Roseland-based Goldman and Kramer.

The move gives Fox Rothschild, based in Philadelphia and known for its prominence in the southern part of the state, a more aggressive position up north, firm officials said early this week.

It also means an expansion of the kind of work the firm does for businesses and wealthy individuals.

"Goldman and Kramer have built an impressive practice over the past 25 years, especially in the areas of tax, estate planning and estate administration," said Mark Silow, administrative partner and chief operating officer of Fox Rothschild.

This is just the latest in a spate of mergers that have brought the firm's roster to more than 400 at torneys.

Legal Marketing | 2007/07/12 05:11

Court TV is adjourning in favor of truTV.

The network on Wednesday announced its name would change, effective Jan. 1, 2008, to better reflect an emphasis on nonfiction programming.

TruTV will still offer court coverage from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, and on its Web site. But the focus shifts at 3 p.m., when a new talk show with Star Jones as host airs.

Nonfiction series like "Forensic Files" and "Haunting Evidence" will continue, the network said. But the network is also developing series on female bounty hunters in Miami, con artists and life-or-death rescues.

Other series in the works include "Outlaw Chasers," about people who try to film tornados up close, and "Neighbors 911," which focuses on feuding families.

"In truTV, we now have the ideal name that fits both the programming and the target audience," said Marc Juris, the network's general manager.

Court TV is now a part of Turner Broadcasting, parent of TNT and TBS, and is owned by Time Warner (nyse: TWX - news - people ) Inc. Time Warner bought the network from Liberty Media (nasdaq: LCAPA - news - people ) last year.

Major EP law firm breaks up, joins Austin-based firm
Legal Marketing | 2007/07/06 01:20

Delgado, Acosta, Braden and Jones, one of El Paso's larger law firms, is being dissolved, and three of its partners have joined forces with an Austin law firm.

Alejandro Acosta Jr. and Hector Delgado, who opened their law firm in 1994, and John Jones, who became a partner in 1995, have become partners of Bickerstaff, Heath, Pollan & Caroom, which has changed its name to Bickerstaff, Heath, Delgado & Acosta. It specializes in state and local government law.

Acosta has become CEO of the Austin-based firm, which now has offices in El Paso, where Acosta and Delgado will be based. Their new firm will retain the Dallas and Houston offices operated by Delgado and Acosta's old firm. Jones will oversee the Houston office.

Two other lawyers in the El Paso firm have moved to the Austin firm while 11 of the El Paso firm's other lawyers have found jobs or opened their own practices, Acosta said.

"We (Bickerstaff, Heath, Delgado & Acosta) are now the largest minority-owned firm in the Southwest with over 30 lawyers statewide," Acosta said.
"We have clients throughout the state and we wanted a statewide firm. ... This makes us a bigger and better firm."

C. Robert Heath, who founded his firm in 1980 along with his now-retired partner Steve Bickerstaff, said, "We had worked with (the) Delgado, Acosta (firm) for several years largely in some matters in El Paso, and we had a good working relationship and great respect for them, and when we determined the possibility of joining together -- that offered some great opportunities for both of us."

The firm now has 18 partners, Heath said.

Paul Braden, the other partner in the El Paso law firm, has become a partner in Fulbright & Jaworski, an international law firm. Braden will work out of El Paso.

Fulbright & Jaworski "is a great firm with a global presence and one of the pre-eminent bond practices in the country (which is the area of the law in which I practice)," Braden said in a written statement.

Two of the Delgado, Acosta firm's lawyers also moved to the Bickerstaff, Heath firm: Ricardo Ortiz is in the Dallas office, and Catherine Than is in the Houston office.

Legal Marketing | 2007/06/16 09:06

Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Preston Gates Ellis LLP was cited as the best corporate law firm in Pittsburgh, according to the seventh annual Legal Industry Research Study conducted by Corporate Board Member magazine and FTI Consulting. The study identifies the top five corporate law firms in 25 major metropolitan areas, according to directors serving on the boards of publicly traded companies listed with the three major exchanges: NASDAQ, New York Stock Exchange and American Stock Exchange.

Among Pittsburgh's top five, Reed Smith LLP ranked second, switching places with K&L Gates from their respective 2006 rankings. Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC placed third, Eckert Seamans Cherin & Mellott LLC was fourth and Cohen & Grigsby PC was fifth. The ranks for those three firms were the same as last year.

The study also identified the top 20 national corporate law firms, led by New York City-based Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom, but no Pittsburgh-based firms made the cut.

Corporate Board Member magazine is based in Nashville, Tenn., with editorial offices in New York City. FTI Consulting is based in New York City.

K&L Gates also led the Pittsburgh list in 2004 and 2005.

Class action or a representative action is a form of lawsuit in which a large group of people collectively bring a claim to court and/or in which a class of defendants is being sued. This form of collective lawsuit originated in the United States and is still predominantly a U.S. phenomenon, at least the U.S. variant of it. In the United States federal courts, class actions are governed by Federal Rules of Civil Procedure Rule. Since 1938, many states have adopted rules similar to the FRCP. However, some states like California have civil procedure systems which deviate significantly from the federal rules; the California Codes provide for four separate types of class actions. As a result, there are two separate treatises devoted solely to the complex topic of California class actions. Some states, such as Virginia, do not provide for any class actions, while others, such as New York, limit the types of claims that may be brought as class actions.
